Principle :

Center pivot irrigation is an agricultural irrigation method that uses a pivot structure to water crops in a circular pattern. This technique is widely employed in agriculture to efficiently irrigate large expanses of farmland. A center pivot system consists of a ramp mounted on wheels, with an irrigation device at one end and a water source at the other. By slowly rotating around a central point, the pivot distributes water evenly over the crops, providing effective and economical irrigation.

Advantages :

  1. Efficient Water Distribution: Center pivot irrigation ensures efficient water distribution, as the rotating pivot evenly spreads water across the field, minimizing water waste and optimizing crop hydration.
  2. Increased Crop Yield: By providing consistent and controlled irrigation, center pivot systems can help increase crop yield and quality, leading to improved agricultural productivity and profitability.
  3. Labor and Time Savings: Automated operation of center pivot systems reduces the need for manual labor and oversight, saving time and labor costs for farmers.

Disadvantages :

  1. Initial Investment Cost: The initial setup cost of installing a center pivot irrigation system can be significant, including the purchase of equipment, installation expenses, and infrastructure development.
  2. Energy Consumption: Operating center pivot systems requires energy, usually in the form of electricity or fuel for the pump and drive system, leading to ongoing operational costs and environmental considerations.
  3. Limited Adaptability to Terrain: Center pivot systems may not be suitable for irregularly shaped fields or areas with uneven terrain, limiting their applicability in certain agricultural settings. Additionally, they require adequate water sources and infrastructure for effective operation, which may not be available in all locations.
